Oh, it is so good to 'see' you all again. I have a feeling that maybe soon we'll meet again 'live'.
I tried playing my games again, but windows Vista won't let me. Any suggestions?

I have no idea what compatibility the Myst games have with Vista. I'd ask around on the forums where Cyan staff hang out. They'd have a better idea.

Thx Jaharen. How are you? Have you been hanging around the caves all this time? I had to slow down, because my husband threatened me with divorce (not really), lol.
I wish you the best of luck with your job search.

Myst and Riven don't work as far as I know. I'm not sure about Exile and Revelation...

To get Myst V to work I made the following patch:

That's really great, indeed, Brian and all... Very Happy

Ok, right now, dear Maharet, what I've found so far (through Google) as for
Myst/Riven/Exile/Myst VI (Myst V see Erik) should help somehow:

The Myst forums on Ubisoft forums...
All the important links as of file downloads work...

General compatability info for Vista...

Info on the MystCommunity forums with a general good solution and link...

A Riven solution on the UruObsession forums...

If nothing helps there's a solution, that will definitely work... you'll need
an old Win '98 CD though to install it after the creation of a Windows 98
virtual machine... The program for the machine is free and seems easy
to install... Please have a look here (MystCommunity forums again)...

Ok, dear, hope you can find the best solution for you... Have fun... Very Happy

Thank you, janaba, that put a smile on my sad face...

Right now, I wish you all a Merry Christmas, and I hope mine will be a merry one too...

A project I have been working (paid job for school) on for about 40 hours ... has just disappeared off my hard disk... I just thought it would be wise to make a back-up just in case, when I found out the folder was suddenly empty.
I have to get it back... How do I explain to them that the folder has been emptied for some unknown reason? Perhaps they won't pay me for all I've done, or the project can't be continued... I poured my heart and soul into this... I really have to get it back! I can't understand how it got deleted.

Does anyone know a tool to recover lost files??? Crying or Very sad

Right now I'm having flashbacks of when I lost 60GB of data off of my computer at work.

Erik, I'd recommend running a full computer search for your files in case they just got moved somewhere. If they're truly gone, the only thing I can think of would be to send your hard drive out to data recovery specialists. They have equipment that can find deleted files.

Re: Lost work on hard drive.

The following is what I'd do.

The number one thing to do is to STOP creating any new files on your drive. You do not want to overwrite any lost work. Hopefully you are browsing the web from another computer - your web browser does download and cache the pages you read.

After Jaharen's advice (trying to search for the files in case you maybe saved them in a spot other than where you realized)....

Number two thing is to scan your hard drive for errors - open "my computer', right click the drive, select Properties, Tools, Error Checking. Do this without checking either of the error-fixing options initially - you don't want to reboot your computer more than absolutely needed.

If the hard drive doesn't have any errors, your next step is an "undeleting" program.

Because you don't want to install any new programs while you're looking for your old files, at this point you need access to another PC. A quick search for "undelete windows" turned up this program, Undelete Plus (currently free), which you can download from http://www.undelete-plus.com/download.html - there are two links, grab the one with no installer. Burn to CD, take that CD to the system where the files are missing. Run the program... and hope for the best.

If your hard drive is failing, the best advice I can provide is to obtain a drive of equal or larger size, and clone your existing drive onto it using a linux recovery CD and 'ddrescue'. That program has saved me from losing my stuff before.

Marten, I totally forgot to say stop creating new files. *smacks forehead* Thanks for adding that!

I tried some of those recovery tools, but my files can't be recovered... I think I know the culprit now: CCleaner. I have used that program numerous times before, never had any problems with it, nor have many other people. I used it today to clean up some temp. windows files and such. I always check what checkboxes are checked, and nothing was wrong with the settings. Why it would touch only one of the folders in my documents is a complete mystery to me... Why would it pick that folder of all folders?
The reason I think CCleaner is the culprit because for the first time I activated safe erasing (files are overwritten so that they can't be retrieved). Oh, had I not done that! Now I can't retrieve them...

Perhaps I accidentally deleted the folder today, and CCleaner emptied the recycle bin afterwards... That is more likely... But I have never done such a stupid thing before, and I can't believe I have done it. Yesterday the folder was still there, and I didn't work on the project today... How would I have deleted that folder by accident before I ran CCleaner...?

And the ironic thing is that I found out that the folder was empty, when I wanted to back-up the folder.

I could try Windows' System Recovery tool, but I don't think that touches personal files...

Oh, dear Erik, I'm so dreadfully sorry for you... Oh my God! What a misfortune... Confused

And I can imagine that there's not the slightest word of consolation that
could comfort you in any way atm... Oh, our sweetest Erik, I can only hope,
that you'll be able to forgive yourself as soon as possible and/or anybody
or any wonderful occurrence will bring your heart relief ... Razz

Edit: Just asked myself and now you, Erik... Will you have to redo that
all over again? Maybe we could be of any help... Please tell us if there's
a chance to help you in any way... Smile
