Proposed music for Episode Zero:

Paragraphs 1-3: Fall of D'ni
Paragraphs 4-6: Yeesha's Theme

Ideally, paragraph 3 should end around 2:45. Longer is fine if it doesn't exceed 3 minutes.

The next two paragraphs need to be read in close to 1m30s. If they run longer, we'll need to skillfully edit and time-compress them (accellerate the audio). The goal should be for Yeesha's theme, which starts at 1:25 of the same-named piece, to really come into play just at the start of paragraph 6.

Thoughts?

I'm starting to feel pretty out of it as far as this episode goes. Like I'm not sure what's going on, or what's the final script. No giant deal, I just feel like I'm supposed to be helping and I don't know what I should be doing. Razz

Which song is "Fall of D'ni?" For some reason, I can't play the Uru soundtrack on my computer. All that will open is the special media. It'll only play the music tracks in simple cd players like in my car, so I haven't connected track names with track music yet.

Fall of D'ni is the eerie music that plays when you're in the pub off the side of the Great Stairs in Ae'gura.

Don't worry about being "out of it" in regards to Episode Zero, or Episode One. Those are well defined at this point. Where help is needed, is in looking over the chat logs and separating the fat from the meat, so that we may deliver tender fillets for Episode Two and forward.

[0] We have some discrepancies between dates on chat logs. I'd like to see those problems sorted out first. Who has the originals of the chat logs that have been formatted and uploaded (and stripped of date and timestamps)? Professor?

[1] Look over the list of chat logs. We have a ton of chat logs already. My feeling is that there's a lot of fluff we can do without. All those who are interested, look over the logs. Look for key messages and events. We don't need four chatlogs of Phil visiting different neighborhoods saying the same thing over and over. Can we pick just one that best represents his evangelism?

[2] There are also holes. For example, the January meeting where Kam's private neighborhood folded and the public Great Tree neighborhood was born - that is missing, and I think it's an important event to recover. Look over Faresis' history of the Great Tree. Are there any inaccuracies? Does it remind you of other events which someone may have logged?

[3] Once we've narrowed down to the chat logs we want to use, and we are in agreement with each other, the next step is to begin trimming the chat logs to the most relevant points. If there are fifteen people in a log and some of them contribute very little, and the discussion lasts for an hour, we don't have to include every last line of dialogue. We want to be faithful, but we also want to stick to the meat.

[4] Look at the script format for Episode One, and begin adapting the chosen chat log portions into that format.

The discussion area for these tasks is Project Structure. I've done an initial pass at what I believe is important and what isn't... up to a point. Cycreim threw in his two cents to finish what I started. But I'd feel more comfortable if we had some more discussion from others on our choices. Different people may have different ideas about what is important to present. So let's get to talking about it!

Here is the revised script for Episode Zero, based upon Professor Askew's first cut. Professor, if you'll let me know what has changed since your first cut, I'll revise this. When we are in agreement, I'll PM our translators to begin working on it.

PS. It looks like there is a line missing before "Both its history and its future." Did something get cut there?

Quote:
A Prologue Picture

The Great Tree
Presents
The Story of the Great Tree
Episode Zero: "The Beginning"

10,000 years ago, a planet died...

The Ronay people, from the world called Garternay...
... knew unquestionably that their home was doomed.

But, they were not without means of escape...
... for these were the keepers of the Art...
... the Art of Writing. Books were their portals.

By writing a complex description of the Age they wished to link to...
... they could traverse an infinite landscape.
The Great Tree of Possibilities, they called it.

The Ronay fled in many directions, but some made their way to Earth.

While mankind began establishing the first human settlements...
... the Ronay were at the peak of civilization deep beneath the surface.
The Ronay arrived within a great cavern they christened D'ni...
... or "New Beginning."

Under the guidance of Ri'neref, the citizens of D'ni began a new way of life.
They developed an ordered system of laws to protect their freedoms.
They constructed massive machinery with which to excavate the stone around them.
And most important of all...
... they perfected the method by which they arrived on Earth:
The Art of Writing.

Three miles below the surface, they carved a new world for themselves.
For nearly one hundred centuries, the D'ni civilization grew and thrived.

And then D'ni fell.

At the hands of a traitor...
... six million D'ni lives were exterminated.
Natural disaster followed unnatural...
... and the few remaining survivors took shelter on other worlds.
The once august Cavern languished and fell into disrepair.

But today, D'ni lives once more.

Twenty years ago, John Loftin discovered the cavern.
In the following months and years, he returned with friends...
... and together they convened what would become the D'ni Restoration Council.

What started as a trickle would become a steady stream of visitors...
... hoping to restore D'ni to what it once was.
Feeling "called" to the Cavern, they have formed a passionate community.
Both its history and its future.

The DRC, a formation of scientists, has taken on the responsibility of studying and restoring D'ni and its Ages.

Some say their methods are meticulous and overly cautious.
Some suggest that the DRC is ignoring the history of the D'ni...
... and with it, important lessons.

But, what history should be restored?
And what shape should D'ni's future take?

There are people who advocate foremost the dogma of Yeesha.
Yeesha... arguably the greatest Writer in D'ni's history...
... a descendant of D'ni survivors, daughter of Atrus, son of Gehn.
She also wants D'ni restored but her goals differ from the DRC.
This "Journey", feared and rejected by some...
... embraced and defended by others...
... highlights the flaws and corrpution that destroyed D'ni...
... in the hope that history will not be repeated.

very nice. What's with the "..."'s, just dramatic emphasis? Separate lines, separate pages, ?

Quote:

The tense is funny, can we change "but" to "and" or is it that big a deal?

Rils: That's one of a couple of lines that I've asked Professor Askew to review/rethink; we're doing some private review on it before taking the next step.

For now, however, I wanted to present the script exactly as it is within the draft film.

"..." occurs at the start or end of a line that continues or is continued from a previous line. Example:

At 50 seconds into the film: "The Ronay people, from the world called Garternay..."

At 56 seconds into the film, the above line clears and is replaced with: "... knew unquestionably that their home was doomed."

re: "..." - ok, groovy, that's what I was wondering!

If you need any further help with editing, let me know. Writing first drafts isn't my forte (though I can certainly do it), but I'm rather well-known around the office for my editing skillz... They are at your service!

Okay, here is the final script for Episode Zero. It is going out to the translators today. I still have to clean up the subtitles of the actual movie but that'll be done in time to insert Daedalus's new (production) logo. Wink

ALSO: Let's start compiling the end credits....

I'd just as soon put everything under one umbrella: "produced by The Great Tree" rather than list the individual contributors from inside the group. But, I suppose that's up to the actual contributors to decide. They can PM me if they'd like to keep their input private.

If we do list each separately...

Script: Gadren, Marten, Prof. D. Askew
Camera: Marten, Prof. D. Askew
Edit: Prof. D. Askew

The rest of these would get listed regardless.
Music: Tim Larkin
German Translation: ireenquench
French Translation: Amarok
Veovis Painting: Julie Dillon
Waver: Thend
Talker: Lady Chaos
Extras: The Fourth Doctor, Vinnie Vermicelli, gwynhwyvar, Lial, Ehren, lightkeeper, Nita, Sparrowhawk.

"This film was assembled using the following software programs: Adobe Photoshop CS, Adobe/Macromedia Flash 8, and Windows Movie Maker [version]"

And the usual Cyan stuff. Let me know if I've left anything out.

Here's the script.
Quote:

To be continued....

EDIT: Added the translators to the credits.

@ Marten : You request me to translate the openining titles
Quote:

Episode Zero:
The Beginning

In order to a correct translation I need to know if, in the line 3, you speak about a great tree (perhaps a symbolic one in the D'ni story) - or - about the The Great Tree group itself ...

Please explain me more Idea

Amarok, "The Great Tree" refers to the group only in this case.

Ireen just got back to me with the German version, with this comment:

Ireen wrote:
I did not translate The Great Tree because it’s a name, like a brand name, hehehe, and it’s simple enough to understand what it would mean translated anyway.

I noticed that the French translation also handles "The Great Tree of Possibilities" nicely too, by providing it untranslated within the sentence as a proper name, and translated within parentheses beneath. I liked that.

Oh, and here's that German translation of the opening, so Daed can whip up international versions of the opening.

Daed doesn't have to whip up translated version of the title sequence. This will be done with subtitles just like the rest of the film.
