If you add the 'forum_child' system, the problem is solved because the layout can be made to look like the second example instead of the "Direct" example.

Or did I misunderstand what you were asking?

PS: Language tags will be needed, as well as IC/OOC tags.

A minor set back, I still think you should keep at it.

That was my take on it, too, jana. So, Tweek, is that your personal opinion? Or was that a Lost-like cryptic hint at other irons in the fire. This is not fanboy wishful thinking on my part...but you did say it.

Haha ooo mystery Shocked

Well Ryan has said there are other projects being worked on, I personally feel we haven't seen the last of the D'niverse, there is still a ton of stuff to be told.

Also, I've been watching Marten work on this since he first mentioned it to me, he's put a lot of effort into it and it would be a shame to see it all be for nought.

A resource like this is still helpful even if there isn't a Myst Online: Uru Live anymore. There is still a community, still D'niverse sites and projects, and in my mind, still a need for rel.to.

Yes, please keep it, Marten.

I have all the URLs to the sites I visit memorized, but I don't need to. All I need to do is just type 6 characters:

r e l . t o

... oh yeah, and hit Enter. Embarassed

Alright, alright. Rel.to isn't going to vanish overnight... if Erik is interested in continuing to work on it, then I will also keep working on it.

I do not want Rel.to to re-invent the wheel. Blade's "Myst Embassy Nexus" site is an excellent resource for all things Myst already, and Rel.to was meant to be narrower in focus, to complement the Nexus by providing a more Uru-centric directory. Rel.to was mean to touch outside of Uru only where the D'niverse overlapped into Uru's territory, and leave the job of cataloging the broader D'niverse to the Nexus. One thing this community does not need is any more competing efforts.

I'll point Blade to this discussion to see how he feels, the next time I see him online (if he doesn't drop by of his own accord first).

Arg!!!! I had a long post and accidentally hit the back button - now it's all lost....

Anyway, to sum up - I've been considering de-commissioning the Nexus for a while, as I don't think it's a useful tool. The software was always awkward, anyway.

No one seems to actually use it, as far as I can tell. The idea was that there would be some sort of central comprehensive directory, like Yahoo. But that's not how people use the net anymore. I'd gathered as many reviews of Myst games as I could, for instance - but I don't think anyone ever really looked through them. People had a few core sites or communities they knew well, and went from there, asked other people or ran google searches.

Rather, I think that a more deliberately designed directory will be more effect. One that organizes things in a way that reflects the way people actually look for things - beginners stuff over here, stuff related to the archivist types over there, etc.

And though MOUL is dying, I think sites like rel.to are even more important now. The community is about to fracture into little self-contained islands with no central thread or rallying point. There needs to be something to keep that community connected, keep everyone at least aware of everyone else. Rel.to can be a part of that - not just being MOUL-focused, but Uru-focused. "Make a home", right? And what is more of a home in this universe but rel.to?

I hope the Guild of Messengers will take up the take of keeping the community connected as well. I think it's very important, as Uru becomes more about the fans than the game.

I spent some time working on rel.to today... I included Tweek's header and I changed the lay-out, so that it looks more like Marten's concepts.

I changed a few things in the database. I added a description field, and I added a field to detect forums. Forums are treated differently now.

Test it at: http://uru.thecitadel.nl/reltotest.php

(The Guilds have descriptions and forums. At the official page you can see that the child 'demo' is indented and that it has a slightly lighter background color)

Positive or negative comments appreciated.

I haven't uploaded the script for view yet, will do that later.

I just realized my header says "six degrees from d'ni" not "six degrees to d'ni"
