I'm usually not one to stir the pot, but recently I heard a rumor that the DRC had burned all of the Great Tree jackets. I wish I could reveal the source, but trust me, I can't. All I can say is that they have been reliable in the past. So take it for what you will, if it's true, then it just shows that the arrogance and animosity of the DRC against the Great Tree members has never left us, and perhaps never will.

What? Oh for crying out loud.

Buh.

I don't know what to say about that. More later I guess.

I've never known the DRC to be so openly hostile and wasteful as to burn jackets. I'd think the most they'd do is shun or ignore them. I doubt they even held the supply.

This remains only a rumor to me.

The DRC has an interesting way of celebrating Guy Fawkes Day. Shocked

Seriously, I don't know what to say about this. It seems more confrontational than the DRC's usual style.

I understand that you can't reveal your source, Ashtar, but while I trust you completely, that means I don't know how far I can trust them.

So... we'll wait and see, I guess.

I'm really not surprised.

I must say I was half expecting something like this. We had the upper hand by far at the time everyone was leaving the Cavern. They had the advantage of all of that time behind the scenes while we weren't there to tip the scales.

I just hope they know what they're getting themselves into.

Ashtar did your source say when the jackets were burned? Recently?

If recently, this must be payback for the poor (but accurate) light we're casting upon the DRC with our documentaries.

I ask partly because of when the news broke.

If it happened last night, as a folklore-aware person I will be extra horrified.

I hope to be reassured that the fact this came to light the day after Bonfire Night is just a coincidence. If they burned them last night, I will go ballistic, because that's even more of a statement.

Reassure me, please, Ashtar?

Annacat: Although my source didn't say, I got the impression that this occurred recently. Another thing that bothered me is that he was rather smug about it saying "So where's your hero now?", in what I believe was a reference to Doug Sharper. But what I'm not sure of was whether or not it was him saying it, or he was relaying what the DRC said.

Really, I'm with the rest of you in hoping it was nothing more than a rumor. But I thought it was important to pass along what I had heard. However this turns out, we need to be vigilant in watching what the DRC is up to.

EDIT: And yes, it was last night that I met with my source, but I'm not sure if what transpired occurred yesterday or sometime earlier. And although my source seems to be neutral, it's a possibility he may lean more towards the DRC point of view. I don't meet with him often, so I've never had a chance to really know his political views. And I do agree we have to be careful in realizing that the DRC might know he's been talking and using him, and myself, as a tool for disinformation.

Yeah, thanks for passing it along.

Does your source tend to be pro-DRC? Did you get the impression you were told out of concern or mocking or just general information?

I would hardly say Sharper is my "hero," but that is the question. It looks like we're going to have to deal with this one on our own.

We need some answers from the DRC.

'Burning' is no doubt an act of aggression. Jackets could have simply been 'lost' or 'gone missing' or even 'thrown out'.

But don't forget, they are just things. Things only have meaning if we give it to them.

They may have gotten rid of our jackets... but they haven't gotten rid of US.

Wow, I'm quite surprised by this! Burning seems a bit extreme. Considering what we (well, you guys at the time) went through to get them, they hafta know what a provocative action that would be. Plus it just sounds out of character for the DRC. I'm going to remain skeptical on this...

That's quite true. Unfortunately, the jackets did have meaning, and were our symbol in the Cavern. If they really did burn them, it can only mean they are trying to erase our unique identity within the community.

I agree with you all in thinking outright burning is an aggressive and seemingly odd action. But is it really "out of character"? Our group is obviously closely linked with Sharper who had personal relationships with all members of the DRC. We only really have his side of these relationships (from his journal) and what we can gleam from passing comments. So who knows, such an outright violent act may be the product of some personal grievence or a very forthright way of sending a message to Sharper himself.

Also assuming it did happen it may have been authorised by only one or two members of the council without the full council's knowledge. It smacks of Kodama to me. An abraisive action sending a clear message which can be justified in the name of efficiency: "You expect us to pay for the man cost of transporting the jackets out of the caver? And we certainly weren't going to leave them lying about for Sharper to hand out to his deciples if he decides to show his face again" sort of deal. Sounds sort of "in character" to me.

But thats just my opinion, meandering as it is. Rolling Eyes

Now, that's interesting. I never had any claim to the jacket, but yeah, I'd like to hear some answers. Though I'll play the centrist here and say we shouldn't jump to conclusions just yet.
