Think of it as a buffet. There are lots of little things to try. If you are only interested in one thing, then you will be disappointed. But if you are willing to fill up your plate with lots of little bits of various things, you get a good meal and can go back for seconds as well. |
Right now... I'm hungry.
mmmm... buffet.... _________________ KI 182798

Brian must have that picture handy somewhere. He should just be able to grab it off the old web site. _________________ Professor Daniel Askew - Securing our reality from the machinations of the Station Masters. |

That would rely upon having a backup copy of the picture somewhere since he lost a lot of stuff in the great hard drive crash of Long Ago. _________________ ~Moiety Jean

Right now,
A little rant.
I've finally initiated a search for a new job. Current employer doesn't know... but then... well, where to begin?
My commute is killing me - and it has become significantly worse this summer as people from California and other areas of the country have flooded into Portland as though it were the last sanctuary from economic woes. I'm now spending 2.5 hours in the car daily on average.
Employee reviews have been due since March and it's now August. I've been with the company since the preceding March... so I am definitely overdue for a proper review.
Benefits at my company are subpar. Vacation grows by a very East Coast design (I think I get one extra day after 5 years). The "employee stock purchase plan" offers only a miniscule discount and requires a $100 yearly participation fee ... I'd be more likely to lose money through this plan than make any. I'm sure someone will pipe up about how their benefits are worse than these, but call me a spoiled rotten prince... I've worked for companies that actually valued their employees, and I don't want to accept less now.
And finally, I feel like I was lied to by my boss when I was hired.
I dislike leaving a job in any period shorter than 3 years... the shortest time I've spent at a job previously has been 4 years, and that was among eleven years in the San Jose and San Francisco Bay Area... through the dot com boom... when many people were leaping from job to job with mere months between.
I'd rather work my way up the ladder and spend enough time at a job to learn to do it well, and become well respected.
That is not going to happen at my current job. I arrive at work tired and grumpy each day because half of my brainpower is already wasted trying not to get into an accident on the roads here.* It is difficult for me not to mouth off under stress when I am already tired... and so I don't believe I have a future there.
Management's response to suggesting that I telecommute once in a while was, "But then we'd have to let everyone do it." And, my problem is compounded every Tuesday, when I am mandated to be present in the office at 8:30AM for a regular company meeting. I was not advised of the 8:30AM Tuesday meeting requirement when I agreed to take the job; in fact, I was told that my schedule could be "flexible" because of the commute I would be facing. Am I wrong in feeling that I was misled?
* Since moving to the Portland Metro area, I've been rear-ended twice (once totalling my previous vehicle, and a second time within a scant 3 months of purchasing a new one). _________________ Durin Mephit * Member of Guild of Messengers - Unless otherwise stated, opinions are mine only and not Guild endorsed.

Right now, just got home from riding a WaveRunner most of the afternoon. AN ABSOLUTE BLAST!
Right now, sending Marten some props & good vibes. Sympathize with your employment plight. I for one, and so many others in the Uru/Myst community genuinely appreciate the help & guidance you've provided. _________________ Crazy for Sale!

Not at all. You were mislead. Also having driven in Portland a few times I truly feel your pain. I think you are right to look for a new job and you should try to get out of the Portland metro area. Those bridges are scary as all hell. _________________ KI# 00635697 |

Yeah it definatly sounds like you were misled. From your description your current work environment isn't letting you perform at a level you would feel comfortable with, and you seem like the kinda guy who takes pride in his work so that only makes the environment worse. I wish you good hunting for a new job! Hopefully one that doesn't involve quite so risky a commute. Fearing for your life every morning can't be a great way to start the day!
um... right now. |

Yes, you're right, Marten, you've been mislead and I agree with you, Dan
This is a worse and difficult situation... I don't know what chances to
survive there are in the States, when you're out of a job....
Maybe we are too much spoilt here in Germany, but sorry, if
I were in a situation like that, I'd rather go and live with less
money (from the government) til I'll find a new job, than to
risk my life and my enjoyment of life every single day....
And as there seem to be no improvements of the situation, of the
working conditions, besides wasting/loosing money as well, in the near future,
or maybe those conditions will never change, cause I really don't
see why they should do that, others will accept them, cause they have to accept this...
...you're absolutely right to look for a new challenge, a new
real chance to go in for a career, to have really fun and find satisfaction
in your job, in doing whatever...
I wish you all the luck in the world for that, Marten
Take care, my friend, cause we don't want to loose you...
I still remember the accident of last year, where there was,
thanks to God, your guardian angel to protect you... |
