First of all, hello on this board

The question being: Why are we the branches?

IMHO it would be much more adequate to state that we are the roots, not the branches. Roots are essential for a tree; you can cut all of the branches and the tree survives, but if you cut the roots it dies inevitably. Also roots are connecting the tree to its environment(I.E. soil) and prevent it from falling. And the direction of life goes from down to up: first the seed, then the roots, then the branches. If we are to rebuild D'ni it'd be more exactt to say that we are the roots.

let me also state that this is a great site

oh, and for all of you who are annoyed about my whining in the last few weeks: I'm in!

Hey, Availle! I noticed you on the UO boards; I'm Wyrmfire there. Congratulations on being allowed in to the caverns, especially now.

In regards to your question, I believe we interpret the metaphor in a different way- to us, D'ni is represented by the roots. We grow from these humble and shadowed beginnings, in whatever direction we choose. We may go in different directions; branches usually do, but we're all part of the same tree.

Others may have a different view, but don't let yourself be limited by the metaphor. We should only use it to the extent that it helps us realize the deeper truths behind it.
